Hill Street Methodist Free Church Tokens

Item reference number: 1

Methodist Free Church Hill Street Newport Mon Sale Of Work M Mordey Treasurer.

(Cox 135 - 140)

Brass checks or tokens, the penny being 'silver' plated. The idea was that the tokens could be bought in advance of a sale of work held at the Methodist Free Church. The tokens could then be used in place of coins at the event. This could have been a way of raisinng money before the sale to buy stock or could have been a way of avoiding using currency at the sale. Anyone who knows exactly why the tokens were used please contact us. Also we would like to know if each denomination had 3 designs (as the 1d, 3d and 6d).

The treasurer of the Newport Methodist Free Church, Mark Mordey (top right), became Mayor of Newport 1889 - 1890.
