Stelvio House Mid 1930s

Photo reference number: 1160

Postcard view.

The house off Bassaleg Road was built for Charles Henry Bailey. His widow, Gertrude, continued to live there after his death. The house was sold to Sir John Cecil Davies - and his widow, Lady Emma, gave the house (minus the gardens) to the Guardians of the Poor as a home for delicate children. Our photo dates to this period.
The house later was owned by Newport Council. In 1996 developers were fined 200000 for part demolishing the listed building.
