John Wyndham Beynon

Beynon, John Wyndham C.B.E., is the only son of the late Mr. Thomas Beynon, J.P., D.L., who was born 2nd December, 1864. His father was High Sheriff of Monmouthshire for 1890-1, and was Mayor of Newport in 1881-2. Educated at Clifton College, and, after spending some time in France and Italy, joined the firm of T. Beynon & Co. Limited, of which he is today the head. Is chairman and managing director of the Newport Abercarn Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., and Fernhill Collieries Ltd. He is chairman of John Lancaster & Co. Ltd., and Powell's Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., and is vice-chairman of the Ebbw Vale Steel. Iron and Coal Co. Ltd. Is chairman of the Aberthaw and Bristol Channel Portland Cement Co. Ltd., and also of the Aberthaw and Rhoose Portland Cement and Lime Co. Ltd., and is a director of the Kent Portland Cement Co. Ltd. He is a director of the Rhymney Railway Co, and the present chairman of the Mon. and South Wales Coal Owners' Association. Mr. Beynon was High Sheriff for the county of Monmouth for 1917-18, and was president of the Newport Chamber of Commerce in 1914. Is a past chairman of the Newport Harbour Commissioners, and for several years represented the St. Mellons District on the County Council. Is chairman of the Newport Borough Conservative and Unionist Association, and a member of the executive committee of the Priory of Wales of the Order of St. John. He commanded the Mon. R.A.S.C., M.T. (V.) during the war, and has been honoured by the King with the C.B.E. Is a Commissioner on the Court of Sewers and a justice of the peace. Residence: The Coldra, Newport. Tel. 2752.
