The temporary bridge on the right was constructed so that the old stone bridge, built at the start of the 1800s, could be demolished and a new wider bridge built. At the time this photo was taken traffic leaving Newport crossed the temporary bridge while traffic entered the town via the old bridge.

The temporary bridge was erected in 1920 and the new bridge officially opened on June 22nd 1927.
