Richard Brook Pugsley

Pugsley, Richard Brook was born in Appledore, North Devon, in 1852, and came to Newport with his parents at the age of four. He was educated at Robarts' School, Charles street, and afterwards at Tewkesbury. In 1861 he took to the sea, and gradually worked his way up to the quarter deck. He obtained his first command in 1875, under the late Mr. Robert Gething, of this port, in one of his sailing ships. In 1879 he joined the steamship service under the present Sir Robert Ropner, and has traded to all parts of the world. In 1888 he relinquished the command of the S.S. "Thorncroft" in order to take up the appointment of harbour master here, under the Newport Harbour Commissioners, which position he still holds. He is Admiralty assessor in the County Court of Monmouthshire. Address: Harbour Office, Dock street. Tel. 2912. Residence: 18 Stow Park avenue.
