Vickery, John Herbert General Manager of the Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway, gained his experience in the course of a varied career with the London and South Western Railway Company. Beginning as a junior clerk in the Goods Manager's Department, he quickly made his way, and, after serving in various branches, was appointed personal clerk to the superintendent of the line. Before he had reached the age of 30 he became chief clerk to the Superintendent of the line in succession to Mr. (now Sir Sam) Fay. Five years afterwards the late Sir Charles Scotter appointed him to the still more responsible post of London District Superintendent, and a few years later he was promoted to be assistant superintendent of the line. In May, 1899, Sir Charles Owens, then general manager, invited him to become his assistant. Mr. Vickery, who has had extensive experience in stafE organisation, was the advocate of the Company in connection with arbitration procedure, and a member of all the various Conciliation Boards connected with the Company. For many years he acted as hon. secretary of the London and South-Western Railway Servants' Orphanage. He was also vice-president of the London and South-Western Railway Servants' Temperance Union.Early in 1913 he wasselected to succeed Mr. John Macaulay as general manager of the Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway Company. He is a Newport Town Councillor, a Magistrate, a Newport Harbour Commissioner, a Newport Pilotage Commissioner, an ex-president of the Newport Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Newport Development Association, a member of the Monmouthshire Territorial Force Association, the South Wales Trade Advisory Committee, and the South Wales Dock Owners' Association, vice-president Newport Ratepayers' Association, president Newport Wharfingers' Association chairman of the Port Labour Committee, and also of the Cargo Labour Conciliation Board. He is also chairman of an important sub-committee established by the Railway Executive Committee, to deal with dock grades of labour at the railway-owned docks throughout the country.
