Francis Walter Raikes

Raikes, Francis Walter was born at Carleton, Forehoe, Norfolk, and is the son of the late Rev. Francis Raikes, M. A., Rector of Barnham, Broom, Norfolk. He was educated at Haileybury College, in Germany, and in the engineering department of King's College, London. Mr. Raikes served his time and gained his engineering experience with Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan & Co. Limited, of Middlesborough. He was for many years the managing director of Messrs. J. J. Cordes and Co. Limited, the well-known firm of nail manufacturers - one of the largest in the country - which was established in 1835. Mr. Raikes still continues to hold the same position in the concern which, for private reasons, was in October, 1903, reconstructed, the name of the firm being altered to its present style, namely, Cordes (Dos Works) Limited. He is a magistrate for the county borough of Newport, and a representative since 1913 of the St. Woolos Ward on the Newport Town Council. Offices at the Dos Works, Factory road, Mill street.
