"The water space in the foreground of the picture is a portion of the Alexandra Dock, which has a total area of 125 acres. In the foreground and also on the left side of the Dock are the coal tips, which lift up to 70 feet from quay level, and the lines of railway connecting therewith. On the right are the cranes and warehouses for dealing with general cargo - inwards and outwards. The facilities available here are of the most modern character, and place Newport in the front rank of the Ocean Ports of the Kingdom. The Docks are owned and operated by the Great Western Railway Company. The Transporter Bridge will be noticed on the bend of the River."
